Why Indonesia is a World-Class Destination for Luxury Hotels

Most couples who write to us start with Bali, and we get it. But living in Ubud and planning honeymoons for couples has taught us that some of Indonesia’s best luxury hotels are found well beyond Bali. These are our favorites across the country, from jungle hideaways in Ubud to wild beaches in Sumba and temple stays near Borobudur, and nearly every one of them is backed by independent inspectors or major travel awards.

With more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia never does luxury the same way twice. You can wake up above a jungle river in Ubud, ride a horse along an empty beach in Sumba or look out over Jakarta from a 65-story tower. And the experts agree. In the 2026 selection the MICHELIN Guide gave Keys to 47 Indonesian hotels, up from 33 in its first Indonesian edition. Two also made The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026, with Desa Potato Head at No. 21 and NIHI Sumba at No. 35, while Mandapa reached No. 61 on the extended list.

None of these hotels are cheap, so if you’re on a tighter budget our guide to affordable hotels in Bali is a better place to start. Still, we believe Indonesia offers some of the best value for luxury travel in the world. A pool villa with a personal butler here often costs far less than a similar stay in the Maldives or Europe, and the hospitality feels warm and genuine in a way that is hard to find anywhere else.

Our top luxury hotel picks across Indonesia

Our favorite luxury hotels in Indonesia. Our favorite luxury hotels in Indonesia.

Bali is still the heart of luxury travel in Indonesia, so 10 of our picks are on the island. The rest prove that you shouldn’t stop there. Sumba feels wild and untouched, Lombok is Bali’s quiet neighbor and Labuan Bajo on Flores is the gateway to Komodo National Park. On Java, Jakarta has world-class city hotels while Yogyakarta and Borobudur put you right next to the island’s greatest temples. And Bintan in the Riau Islands is an easy beach escape from Singapore.

All but two of our picks hold a MICHELIN Key or a Forbes Travel Guide rating, and many hold both. Jump straight to your destination:

How we chose the best luxury hotels in Indonesia

Almost every hotel in Indonesia calls itself luxurious, so we didn’t rely on our own taste alone. We started with independent ratings and awards, and then we narrowed the list down using what we know from planning trips for couples.

  • Independent ratings came first. We started with hotels recognized by respected authorities such as the MICHELIN Guide, Forbes Travel Guide or The Leading Hotels of the World, and we checked each rating against the 2026 results. We made only two exceptions, for hotels with a story worth telling, and we explain why in their listings.
  • A lasting reputation mattered too. We also looked at The World’s 50 Best Hotels, the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards and the CondĂŠ Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards to find hotels that keep impressing experts and guests year after year.
  • Variety beat repeats. We usually picked one hotel per brand, which is why there is only one Four Seasons on our list (Sayan). The exception is Marriott’s Luxury Collection, because its resorts in Labuan Bajo and Lombok feel completely different.
  • Every hotel is bookable on Booking.com. That way you can compare dates, read verified reviews and often cancel for free. It’s also the reason Amanjiwo in Central Java, one of only three Three-Key hotels in Indonesia, didn’t make our list.

What hotel ratings in Indonesia actually mean

Nearly every hotel seems to claim five stars, so here is what the ratings in this article actually mean.

Rating Who awards it What it tells you Where to check
Official star rating Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism (Regulation PM.53/HM.001/MPEK/2013), after an audit by a licensed certification body The hotel meets the legal five-star standards, but it says little about how special your stay will feel SISUPAR portal
MICHELIN Keys Anonymous MICHELIN inspectors who judge architecture, service, character, value and sense of place One Key is “a very special stay”, two Keys “an exceptional stay” and three Keys “an extraordinary stay”. Only Mandapa, NIHI Sumba and Amanjiwo hold three in Indonesia MICHELIN Key selection for Indonesia
Forbes Travel Guide Inspectors who test hotels against up to 900 service standards Five-Star is the highest level, and only six hotels in Bali hold it right now Forbes Star Award winners
The Leading Hotels of the World A collection of independent luxury hotels with regular quality checks Membership means a hotel keeps meeting strict standards. Indonesian members include NIHI Sumba, Capella Ubud, Soori Bali and The Sanchaya Leading Hotels of the World in Asia
Tribute Portfolio Marriott A collection of independent hotels with real character or history. The Hermitage in Jakarta was the first in Indonesia to join Tribute Portfolio hotels
The World’s 50 Best Hotels A vote by more than 800 hotel and travel experts worldwide One of the clearest signs that a hotel is respected internationally The World’s 50 Best Hotels list

Our picks pair our own experience with the verdict of these experts, so jump to Bali, Jakarta, Sumba, Flores, Riau, Yogyakarta, Central Java or Lombok and find your perfect stay.

Luxurious hotels in Bali

We live in Ubud, so this is the island we know best. Our 10 Bali picks range from jungle hideaways in Ubud and Payangan to clifftop villas in Uluwatu and beach resorts in Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Seminyak and Tabanan. If Bali is your only stop, our guide to the most luxurious hotels in Bali goes even deeper.

Luxurious hotels in Jakarta

Jakarta isn’t the first place we would send a honeymoon couple, but its best hotels rival anything in Asia and it is home to Indonesia’s busiest airport. That’s why a night or two fits naturally at the start or end of your trip. One of our picks is all about skyline views and award-winning dining, and the other is a rare piece of colonial history in leafy Menteng.

Luxurious hotels in Sumba

Sumba is only a short flight east of Bali, yet it feels like another world of wild beaches, thatched-roof villages and horses running along the sand. The island has just a handful of hotels, but one of them holds three MICHELIN Keys. Flights land at Tambolaka and the drive to the resort takes a while, so plan at least four nights.

Luxurious hotels in Labuan Bajo, Flores

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its dragons, pink-sand beaches and world-class diving. True luxury resorts have only just arrived here, and our two picks are the best of them. Most couples pair their stay with a boat trip through the park, either as a day tour or a few nights on a liveaboard.

Luxurious hotels in Bintan, Riau Islands

Bintan is less than an hour by ferry from Singapore, and life here is all about white-sand beaches and slow resort days. It’s the easiest way to add a quiet beach escape to a Singapore trip.

Luxurious hotels in Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Java and is known for its royal palace, its batik and its food. It is also the base for visiting Prambanan and Borobudur, which are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it is only a short flight from Bali. Our pick is a calm riverside retreat that makes temple days feel relaxed rather than rushed.

Luxurious hotels in Central Java

Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, and it sits about an hour’s drive from Yogyakarta. Most visitors come on a day trip, but sleeping next to the temple lets you arrive early before the tour buses and spend the rest of the day among green hills and rice fields. We suggest two nights here combined with a few nights in Yogyakarta.

Luxurious hotels in Lombok

Lombok is Bali’s neighbor to the east and only a short flight or fast-boat ride away, yet it feels much quieter with its empty beaches, rice fields and Mount Rinjani. Two of our picks share Sire Beach in the northwest, one full of antiques and history and the other sleek and new. The third is a tiny villa hideaway on a remote bay in the southeast.

What stayed with us at Hotel Tugu Lombok wasn’t only its buildings and art. It was the small moments too, like traditional snacks served on banana leaves right by the beach and the giant vintage “Naar Lombok” poster on the lawn.

Our tips for booking a luxury hotel in Indonesia

✔️ Pick the right season. The dry season from about April to October brings the most reliable weather. The wet season turns everything green and resorts are quieter, but expect afternoon downpours.

✔️ Book early for peak periods. July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast, and many of these hotels have only a few dozen villas.

✔️ Combine destinations. Most couples base themselves in Bali and add a few nights elsewhere. Lombok, Sumba, Labuan Bajo and Yogyakarta are all a short flight away, while Bintan pairs well with Singapore and Jakarta works as a first or last stop.

✔️ Leave time for transfers. Remote resorts are part of the magic, but they take time to reach, so we always plan extra time on travel days.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most luxurious hotel in Indonesia?

Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Ubud is the most decorated, with Three MICHELIN Keys and a Forbes Five-Star rating. NIHI Sumba also holds three Keys, and if you prefer a lively design hotel, Desa Potato Head is Indonesia’s highest-ranked hotel on The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026.

How many hotels in Indonesia have MICHELIN Keys?

In 2026, 47 Indonesian hotels hold at least one Key. Most of them are in Bali, but you’ll also find them in Jakarta, Java, Lombok, Sumba, Flores and the Riau Islands. Only Mandapa, NIHI Sumba and Amanjiwo hold the maximum of three.

Are all the hotels on this list officially five-star?

They all offer a five-star level of comfort and service. If the official Indonesian classification matters to you, you can check any hotel on the Ministry of Tourism’s SISUPAR portal.

Is it worth traveling beyond Bali for a luxury stay?

Yes, if you have enough time. The other islands offer more space and fewer crowds, and Java adds a cultural side that Bali can’t match. Plan at least two or three nights per stop so the extra travel feels worth it.
