1. Bambu Indah Eco Resort Ubud
Sayan, west of UbudLove it? Check prices now!
Bambu Indah is our favorite ecologically mindful resort in the Ubud area. Founded by the couple that also runs Bali's famous Green School, Bambu Indah is designed so that guests can experience nature up close. Walking around this resort is an adventure in itself, with unique walkways along the Ayung river as well as bamboo bridges spanning across, a unique wooden elevator down into a cave and 15 natural spring-fed pools. However with only 23 bamboo rooms, this is still a boutique hotel. We love having a cocktail during sunset from the Elevator bar.
Bambu Indah considers itself as an experiment in regenerative hospitality, by not just preserving nature, but building it back. Most structures are built with replenishable bamboo. The resort grows their own rice and vegetables. Plastics, cement and chemicals are avoided alltogether. The pools are supplied by water from underground aquifers and are filtered naturally by Bali's volcanic rock. Wastewater is used for irrigation of the gardens and rice fields. Finally, recognizing that Bali's nights can be hot, rooms do offer air conditioning, but in a way that just the bed area is cooled, minimizing energy usage.

2. Suenyo Eco Retreat
Jungle 20 mins from CangguLove it? Check prices now!
Located in a secluded in a jungle river valley, but still only 20 minutes drive from Canggu. That is the promise of the 5-star boutique Suenyo Eco Retreat. Read our full review, as we were able to stay in one of their 5 spectacular private bamboo "Paviljons" with private pool and bathtub overlooking a jungle river. Our Pavilion featured spectacular bamboo architecture, unobstructed jungle river views, a private infinity pool and riverside bathtub.
There are many positive things to say about this place. We recommend trying the food here, while its a very small resort (5 rooms only) they clearly spent a lot of effort on perfecting their menu with unique twists on traditional Indonesian dishes. You can have a Balinese massage as a couple at a calm spot next to the river. And if you get bored, Canggu and Tanah Lot are only a short drive away (you do have to climb a bunch of stairs out of the valley to get back to the reception though!).

3. Kelapa Retreat & Spa
Pekutatan, West BaliLove it? Check prices now!
We stayed 2 nights at Kelapa Retreat & Spa, a 5 star boutique escape tucked under 500 coconut trees on Pekutatan's black sand coast, just past the Medewi surf break and about 2.5 hours from the airport. Our Ocean Pool Villa came with a private plunge pool close enough to the waves to fall asleep to, and with only 26 rooms on the property, privacy was never an issue. The stay included full board at Tides Restaurant, capped off by a candlelit King and Queen dinner right on the beach, honestly it was easily the highlight of the trip.
Days can be filled with a couple's massage at ocean facing Samudra Spa and we did it too, also continue by morning yoga, a Balinese cooking class, or planting a coconut sapling at Kelapa Garden: one of our favorite contribute to our sustainable land. While afternoons call for the resort's beachfront tire swing or a short walk to Bombora Medewi for a laid back drink. It's the kind of place built for total disconnection, it was quiet beaches and staff who remember your name by day two.

Medewi, West Bali (1.5 hours drive from Canggu)Love it? Check prices now!
Except for some surfers, very few tourists venture far enough west to get even close to Puri Dajuma. This beachfront eco resort is located close to the Medewi surf break. Arriving here means leaving the hustle and bustle of South Bali behind. Comfortable cottages and villas, two great pools and a good restaurant with a wide variety of Indonesian and Western dishes are part of Puri Dajuma.
A natural garden full of plants and palm trees are the only thing separating the cottages from the beach. Due to the surf break, the calming sounds of the ocean can always be heard in the distance. As this is a remote area, fortunately there are plenty activities around the resort. Surfing, snorkeling, fishing and cycling through the local region are just some of your options.

10. Hotel Tjampuhan Spa
Tjampuhan, close to central Ubud.Love it? Check prices now!
Tjampuhan is one of the oldest hotels in Ubud, established in 1928, and is good value for its location, but be prepared to climb a lot of stairs as there are no elevators. We often go here for the sauna complex! This historical hotel is a tribute to Ubud’s artistic heritage which is still clearly reflected. As the first hotel that opened as Ubud gained popularity with international artists in the early 20th century, this royal guest house graciously hosted celebrities and foreign painters such as Walter Spies. Hotel Tjampuhan honours Bali’s cultural heritage with a fine assortment of classic guest rooms, each with a sense of artistry that is uniquely carved from indigenous timber and adorned with Balinese artwork.
While close to town, staying in this hotel will make you feel connected to nature as the views over the Tjampuhan river are beautiful and the whole resort blends really well into its environment. Despite being secluded, the hotel is still conveniently situated in walking distance to Ubud Center where the main attraction and dining options are located. The hotel received the Emerald Award from the Balinese Tri Hita Karana foundation.
